CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION
Poetry Finalist
Untitled by Nicola Mullan
See the girl walk with an air of control
See her façade as she plays out her role
See her help others more like her than they know
See the confusion within her ignored
See her taking so much time to care
See those around her all the time unaware
See her maintaining the poise that’s expected
See the relief that no-one’s suspected
See her door close at the end of the day
See the cool confidence crumble away
See her acknowledge her bitter defeat
See her curl up in a corner and weep
See the reflection as she looks in the mirror
See the torment stir slowly within her
See her decision unfold like her mask
See her pick up her phone and ask
See the reaction, making people aware
See the support which is suddenly there
See her relief- this isn’t so bad
See her let go of feeling so sad
See her allowing other people to see
She’s only human- dear reader, see ME
"As soon as I heard about the 'see me' creative writing competition, I was really keen to be involved. The 'support' theme inspired me to write about my own fear of telling people I was suffering from depression, but receiving amazing support from my family and friends when I did tell them.”
I was stunned when I found out I'm a finalist, and I'm really looking forward to meeting the judges at the winners' day and finding out who the overall winners are. This has been a really positive part of my recovery and has inspired me to write more."
