How We Work

‘see me’s ‘model of change’ is based on the belief that we need to raise awareness of stigma and challenge people stigmatising attitudes before we can expect to change their discriminatory behaviour.

We also believe that we have to keep some things in mind at all times when we run the campaign:

  • We are not the target audience. The campaign has to speak with relevance and simplicity to those who stigmatise and discriminate.
  • The campaign needs to ring true to the lived experience of those who face mental health stigma and discrimination.

We must make use of the available evidence to steer the direction of the campaign. We gain this through the following channels:

  • The Scottish Governments Public Attitudes Survey
  • Our own Hear Me (and Hear Me 2) surveys of those with lived-experience of mental ill-health
  • Evaluations of our campaign launches and activities
  • Focus Groups with people affected by stigma, as well as with our target audiences.
  • Follow up one-to-one interviews: to help us to really understand why stigma and discrimination happens.
  • Regional Meetings where we can meet activists and those interested in the campaign
  • ‘see me’ commissioned research and surveys
  • The campaign is responsible for spending public money and so we have to spend our resources where they will be most effective.
  • The voices of those who experience stigma and discrimination have to be at the centre of the campaign
