‘Are we really listening?’ - Small grants available for projects to tackle mental health stigma with BME Communities

Your invitation to apply

‘Are We Really Listening?’ is a project to support new initiatives to reduce mental health stigma in Black and minority ethnic (BME) communities in Scotland. NHS Health Scotland want to fund four short term projects to try tackling this stigma locally and we would like you to consider applying. We will be funding four projects in Scotland.  Each project will receive £3,000 funding and 5 months support from us between August and December 2010.

NHS Health Scotland’s is keen to learn good practice of engaging with BME communities and effective ways of diverse communities talking about mental health problems openly within their community.

  Who can apply?

We welcome applications from a wide variety of sources.  Anyone who works broadly in health or mental health improvement, equalities, BME communities or any combination, across the voluntary sector and public sector in Scotland can apply.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for proposals which:

  • Use creative methods
  • Haven’t been tried before
  • Encourage people from BME communities to talk about mental health

We welcome in particular applications for projects targeting men or young people (16-25 years) from BME communities.

Selection Process

Those who are interested in taking part can apply by completing an application form with details if their proposed project.  There will be a selection process before the four projects are chosen.

We will initially short-list eight projects. These projects will then present their proposals to a small panel at NHS Health Scotland.  Four will then be selected to receive funding and continue with their project for five months.
