'see me' is a high profile campaign to end to stigma and discrimination against mental ill health. However, there are organisations and groups working nationwide to improve public understanding of the issues involved. If you want to find out more, this page provides links to some really useful websites packed with information on mental health and associated issues.

There are many organisations which provide information, advice and other support in relation to mental health problems.  Some are listed below and you can find many more by going into the websites listed here.

'see me' tries to list sites which others have found useful. However, as with all internet sites, content can change over time and links become out of date. Please tell us if you experience difficulties accessing these sites or have concerns about content.

Mind
This comprehensive website provides information on Mind#8217;s work in England, with links to mind Cymru in Wales. It has a comprehensive database of information leaflets and web links.

Mental Health Foundation
Aims to improve the lives of everyone with mental health problems or learning disabilities. Use research, service development and information to increase understanding and meet people’s needs.

BBC Mental Health
BBC Online have mental health pages within their health section with information covering a wide range of topics.

National Electronic Library For Mental Health
This site is run by the NHS in England and attempts to provide information and access to evidence based guidelines etc for all areas of mental health.

NHS Scotland Improving Mental Health Information Project
This project is dedicated to bringing statistical data on mental health to the public in an accessible and useful way.

Mental Health Care
This site is for anyone looking for information about mental illness and the latest research from the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry. The site currently deals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and is particularly suited to the carers, friends and family of anyone with a mental heatlh problem.

National Institute for Mental Health in England
NIMHE has a national role across England, supporting and promoting local and national work on mental health at all levels.

The Samaritans
The Samaritans has provided a listening service for many years, to people in crisis or despair. You can also contact them anonymously by email. Recently the Samaritans have been active in fighting stigma and promoting good mental health.

Mentality
Mentality offer a wide range of information on mental health promotion. It is the only UK organisation focussing specifically on mental wellbeing.

Breathing Space
Website of the  helpline Breathing Space, set up as part of the National Programme for Improving Mental Health and Wellbeing to provide confidential advice/information particularly on depression and feeling low.

The Mental Welfare Commission
The Mental Welfare Commission is an independent organisation set up by Parliament with the responsibility of protecting the welfare of people with mental disorder (including learning disabilities and dementia) in Scotland. They have a duty to anyone with a mental disorder whether they are in hospital, in local authority, voluntary run or private accommodation or in their own homes. Work includes visiting people with hospital and in the community, investigating cases of deficiency in care or treatment and providing information and advice.

Mental Health Media
Mental Health Media works to challenge the discrimination and exclusion faced by people with a psychiatric label by promoting their voices using all media.

NHS Direct
NHS Direct Online provides a wide range of health related information, and, for England, provides 24 hour nurse led advice by telephone.

SANE/ SANELINE
SANE is a national mental health charity which aims to raise awareness of mental illness, campaign to improve services and initiate and fund research into the causes of serious mental illness through its research centre. SANELINE 0845 767 8000 (available 12 noon to 2 am every day) is a national helpline providing emotional support and information to those experiencing mental health problems, their families, carers and professionals.

Reaching Deaf Minds
Reaching Deaf Minds is a key part of Sign's work to make health and social care providers aware of the need to promote positive mental health for all d/Deaf people, parent/carers, educators and employers.

OCD action is the national organisation for people with Obssessive Compulsive Disorder.

Eating Disorders Assocation- Young People Pages
Aimed specifically at young people, the site provides information and support on all aspects of eating disorders. Includes access to dedicated helpline and text/call back service.

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)

STEADY
STEADY is an MDF young people's project, providing information and self-management training to young people with bipolar disorder. They run web-forums and will shortly be running self-management online.

Manic Depression Fellowship
MDF is the leading voluntary sector organisation for bipolar disorders. It supports a network of self-help groups across Scotland, provides publications and a newsletter, and represents the interests of people with the diagnosis, and their carers.

Bipolar Fellowship Scotland

Depression Alliance
Depression Alliance is the leading voluntary sector organisation working on depression. It runs a network of self-help groups and provides information and advice.

Depression Central
This site is run by a psychiatrist in the USA. It is technical in places, but has a great deal of information about depression and bipolar disorders.

Blue Pages (Australia)
Blue pages is a depression information resource set up to provide people with reliable, evidence based information on depression treatments…from chocolate to ECT.

Beyond Blue (Australia)
This Australian national depression initiative site contains a wealth of information on depression, self help ideas and approaches to depression. it also has some excellent, digestible factsheets on the subject.

Depression in Teenagers
Developed by the Young People's Unit in Edinburgh, this site is an interactive resource for young people with information, self-help information and sources of further guidance.

The Lighthouse Sanctuary

The Lighthouse Sanctuary aims to provide a safe, informative and supportive environment for survivors of abuse.

The website seeks to provide survivors of abuse and their families/partners with information and resources for support. To provide people with a better understanding of the emotional, physical and mental trauma of living and surviving abuse.

The message board is open to survivors of abuse to share experiences, and gain support from each other in a non-judgemental and understanding environment, there is also a section for family and friends. It is not a substitute for professional help and counselling but discussing abuse with others who have survived can be invaluable.



Self-Harm

Penumbra Self-Harm Project Information
Information about 'see me' alliance member Penumbra's self harm projects. They offer training and direct support in several locations across Scotland.

SIARI
This site was started by Jan Sutton, a psychotherapist working in the field of self-harm and sexual abuse. It aims to provide a UK based community providing information.

Secret Shame
This site is the home of the "Bodies under Siege" mailing list, and is one of the most comprehensive resources for self-harm on the web.

National Self-Harm Network
The national self-harm network is a small organisation primarily staffed by volunteers, which tries to provide information and support to people across the country. they are currently running a campaign to collect details of episodes of self harm related stigma in Accident and emergency Departmants.

Bristol Crisis Centre for Women
Mainly dedicated to adults who self-harm. There is also advice about abuse, and coping with flashabcks. The organisation runs a helpline about self-harm and can provide detailed awareness training materials.

National Inquiry into Self Harm In Young People
This enquiry has been funded by a range of grant-making bodies, and is being coordinated by mental health foundation.

Young People and Self-Harm Resource
Run by the National Children's Bureau, this site provides information on a wide range of activities and initiatives that relate to youn people and self-harm.

PAPYRUS
Provides UK resources and support for those dealing with depression, self-harm and suicide, particualrly teenagers and young adults. Has a specific area for parents, and professionals working with young people.

A user led orgnisation offering comprehensive infomration and support for people diagnosed with BPD, or who meet the criteria.

Employers and the Workplace

Centre for Healthy Working Lives
A new organisation that will combine the functions of Scotland's Health At Work and Healthy Working Lives. This will eventually provide a clearing house for information and practical support for all workplace health issues.

Scotland's Health at Work
SHAW are a key partner of 'see me' in the Employment and the Workplace Campaign. They are currently developing a commendation award for Mental Health and Wellbeing tat will recognise employers efforts in adopting good practice in this area. Forth Sector
Forth Sector develops social firms to provide supported employment for people with mental health problems returning to work.

Social Firms Scotland
Social Firms Scotland exists to promote and develop new social firms throughout Scotland, and to help existing ones develop their capacity to create further employment for disabled people. It is a membership organisation, and is working at both national policy level and at local level.

Scottish Union of Supported Employment
SUSE is an orgainsation linking some 70 organisation providing supported employment services. It offers training, resources, and an online discussion forum around the issues.

UK wide body responsible for combating disability discrimination, including that on grounds of mental health related disability.

This site is an initiative of the Robert Mond Memorial Trust, and aims to support fighting stigma in all forums. It is also UK based. It is possible to download the Royal College of Psychiatrists "Every Family in the Land" report on stigma.

No Stigma (USA)
Two of several initiatives in the US, one looking at information, and another at a version of 'see me' Stigma Stopwatch.

Canadian Mental Health Association
Canadian anti-stigma work, featuring television adverts and other resources used in their mental health week activities.

Like Minds, Like Mine (New Zealand)
This is the website of the highly successful New Zealand anti-stigma campaign.

Sane Australia (Stigma Watch)
This is a particularly good anti-stigma campaign focusing around the successful media monitoring campaign that has been running for two years.

Open The Doors (International)
This is an international site, bringing together anti-stigma work from all over the world.

NAMI Stigma Busters (USA)
this is the site of the American equivalent of Stigma Stopwatch. They have some 11,000 activists across the USA, and publish their bulletins online.

Change Our Minds (UK)
This is the anti-stigma initiative being run by The Samaritans. The site features information, games, an unreleased track by Radiohead, and much more.

NIMHE Anti-Stigma Initiative (UK)
This site suceeds the MindOut for Mental Health site, which is being phased out as a new anti-stigma initiative starts in England. This site has all the old materials fromMindOut, plus new resources.

Changing Minds
This campaign is run by The Royal College of psychiatrists. The site has a comprehensive history of anti-stigma work, and information/campaigning ideas for download.

Open Up: Anti Discrimination Toolkit (UK)
Open Up: Mental Health Media's Anti-discrimination Toolkit project has produced a unique set of multimedia resources that will support people to come together and lead the way in taking positive action against discrimination.

Heads Up Scotland
The National Project for Children and Young People's Mental Health was established by The Scottish Executive to contribute to the range of activity already underway in Scotland to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. the site offers information on the project work and progress.

Barnardo's
Barnardo's works with the most vulnerable young people through a network of local projects. They also carry out research and policy work.

NSPCC
The NSPCC does not operate in Scotland, but is one of the UK's leading organisations protecting child welfare.

- Suicide

Choose Life

A National Strategy and Action Plan to Prevent Suicide in Scotland. Choose Life is a 10 year plan aimed at reducing suicides in Scotland by 20% by 2013.  It is the product of over 2 years work which drew on the experience and expertise of a broad range of partners including the family members of people who had attempted or completed suicide, health and social care workers, teachers, young people, suicide survivors, public health specialists, voluntary and community agencies, and many others.
