Taking Action

Stigma Stop Watchers have a part to play in improving the quality of mental health coverage. All you have to do is report back to us on good or bad practice wherever you find it.

We want to hear your comments on any stigmatising press items which match the points in this checklist:

*Stigma The incident involves use of inaccurate or inappropriate reporting of mental health issues.
*Media The incident has appeared in the media, whether it be a TV or radio programme newspaper or magazine article, editorial or advertising.
*Verified Full details of the stigmatising incident are supplied, including source, date and name of the person responsible. Where possible,
copies of articles should be sent to Stigma Stop Watch ‘see me’ 9-13 Maritime Street, Edinburgh, EH6 6SB
*Current The report is sent within one month of the occurrence of stigma.

We’ll then decide whether to share your information on the “see me” website to give other Stigma Stop Watchers the chance to send in messages of praise or complaint on this or other stigmatising coverage. We may also issue alerts (by email or post) to all Stigma Stop Watchers to ensure a rapid response where an issue needs to be addressed quickly.

If you would like to see the advice we are giving to journalists click here (Opens in new window) to download 'see me' Stigma Stopwatch media guidelines.

To order more copies of the media guidelines please contact the 'see me' office on 0131 624 8945 or to email please click here.

You will also find Sample Letters and Links to some relevant bodies.

'see me' will publish regular Stigma Stop Watch bulletins with news of who has attracted criticism or acclaim and we will publish their reactions if they choose to respond.

N.B. The final decision to share information received by Stigma Stop Watch rests with 'see me'.
